Saturday Update

Luc ate today! He's breathed completely on his own for 24 hours. We're on our way it appears.

Lucas Update

This day started bad -- we had to make a decision about whether to allow the hospital to give him some blood to boost his count. After a million phone calls seeking advice, we told them to go for it.

The afternoon got better. They took away his breathing mechanisms, and he did great. Rebekah and I both got to hold him for awhile.

Various Thoughts on Luc
Each time I visit the Level II nursery to hang out with him, I find myself more attached to him. When we finally can hold him, this kid is going to go days without being set down. His little delay in being with us is making his life even more special to us.

The doctors continue to offer encouraging news. Today they said he's getting better, but very slowly.

Dave, a law school friend of mine, encouraged me tonight by telling me how he was born several month premature and survived after months in the hospital.

Luc's name means "light" or "luminous," and his middle name "Brant" means "fiery torch."

Tori and I have been alone at the house the last two nights. Our prayers for him have been special.

Big News (& a Big Concern)

Lucas Brant Hubbard entered the world at 2:53 AM Wednesday, weighing in at 6 lbs, 6 oz., and measuring 20 inches long. We're ecstatic to welcome him to the Hubbard family.

The doctors have determined that Luc is premature by a few weeks, and therefore his lungs are not fully developed. Although we are told he has a 99% chance of being just fine, he will have to stay in the hospital for one week (or more), he has breathing tubes and other things hooked up to him, and Rebekah and I have to go the Level II nursery at the hospital to visit him (Tori can't even go).

So, please celebrate with us, and please pray with us for the day that Luc can be at home completely healthy with us.

Preparing
In this season, I'm asking myself two basic questions that I think we all would do well to be asking:

1) How's it going with Father?

2) How's it going with Family?

More specifically, is there anything going on directly between God & me? Is there life flowing from Him to me (other than what is dependant on some book, or some idea, or some religous event, etc?). I'm becoming convinced it all starts with that connection and then flows to our connections with each other and then our connections to the rest of the world.

Then, what's going on between me and my most intimate community? Are we connected relationally, and is there a depth to why we are a community? If not, what am I doing (or who am I being) to allow that depth to improve?

I'm not there yet on either of these issues. But I'm convinced that our health is more dependant on these questions than on many of the exterior issues on which we more commonly focus our attention.
